About
Serving Northeast Charlotte, NC

Many ancient Greeks believed that if one wants to improve a society's morality,

he should first change people's music before changing their laws.

The great philosophers and theologians have treasured music's value

for imbuing this world with beauty, truth, and goodness for millennia.

-------------------------------------------

Although modernity has changed our understanding of music's role in society, the great thinkers have taught us

that music functions in a powerful, transformational manner. And thus the study of music is not simply for entertaining,

it is an edifying experience that cultivates beauty, discipline, and, as the ancients would even argue, moral improvement.

Music making builds communities and strengthen familial bonds when shared regularly.

Thus my love for transmitting the art of classical and sacred music to the next generation. With twenty-five years of teaching experience, including the last ten as a college professor teaching music majors, I am uniquely qualified to provide exceptional value for students who are willing to work hard, be curious, and participate in passing down the Western classical music tradition.

About Me

I have been teaching students since 1998.  My  students have won honors

in state and local auditions as well as monetary awards from various

organizations for their performances.

I earned a doctorate in piano performance from the University of South

Carolina, was awarded tenure as a college professor, and have had

extensive training with Taubman and Alexander techniques. I am

experienced speaker and clinician, having presented to music teachers'

organizations across the Southeast. I have taught full-time at the college

level since 2013, but I am now working primarily outside of the college

studio in administration.

My students have won awards to attend Brevard Music Center, scholarships from the South Carolina Federation of Music Clubs, and competitive scholarships from the Columbia Music Clubs. Recently, my high school students won honorable mentions in the Spokane Piano Competition in Classical, Romantic, and Baroque categories. My students have participated in masterclasses with many well known pianists such as Ann Schein, Nelita True, Sa
ndra Shen, Sheila Paige, and Scott Price.

Ages / Skill Levels Taught

I work well with motivated students who have a passion for learning the craft and art of music-making: for serious piano students who practice daily, need strong coaching and practice skills, and are looking for solid growth as a musicians. I teach high school and advanced middle school-age students.

In addition, I coach piano teachers on their teaching and productivity. I work with teachers who need refining their skills such as fingering, technique, developing a more ergonomic technique, and other issues.

Teacher Coachings

I have provided masterclasses and coachings for teachers across the Southeast on a variety of topics ranging from fingering to developing good physical wellness at the piano. I provide coachings for teachers who need some musical or technical assistance on their own repertoire or their students' repertoire.  These can be single-appointment sessions or regularly scheduled.

Certifications and Awards

Prior to earning my doctorate, I was a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music through MTNA. I have performed recitals from Charleston to New York and as far west at Tacoma, Washington. I have recorded and arranged hymn settings primarily for sacred piano. My most recent project is a collection of intermediate level settings of spirituals.
